Ofcom consults about mmWave auction regulations
Ofcom, the UK regulator for communications services, has launched a consultation about their proposals to enable the industry to use a large amount of spectrum in the 26 GHz and 40 GHz bands (together, “mmWave spectrum”) for new services, including 5G. The 26 GHz and 40 GHz spectrum bands, which together comprise 6.25 GHz of spectrum, have been identified for mobile services globally and for 5G in Europe. Making mmWave spectrum available for new uses has the potential to deliver significant benefits to people and businesses in the UK.
This topic is one that CEPA's team of expert communications sector advisors have considered in detail, publishing a briefing paper "Spectrum auctions: mmWave frequencies for 5G mobile" last year.
Ofcom invites comments on their proposals by 8 July. If you would like to find out more about the potential implications of the proposed changes, our team would be pleased to advise you.
