We were delighted to welcome three A-level Economics students to CEPA for an immersive two-day work experience session!

We introduced the students to the world of economic consultancy and shared insights into some of our key sectors - energy, water and global health. They also explored the fundamentals of price controls and took part in a company-wide session on CEPA’s contributions to the PR24 price control determinations. A huge thank you to all the CEPA staff who took the time to welcome them and provide training throughout the two days!

Tasked with a real-world research challenge, they dove into the debate on whether Heathrow should expand and build a third runway. Students showcased their analytical skills discussing Heathrow's market power and the necessity for price regulation, and its role as a hub airport. They examined the economic costs and benefits of expansion, bringing to light various positive and negative externalities that an expanded airport would bring. They also explored the compatibility of Heathrow's expansion with net-zero targets and proposed alternatives, such as expansion of alternative airports or reinforcement of rail networks.

Reflecting on the experience, one of the students shared: "This experience reinforced my interest in economic consulting and deepened my appreciation for the profession. [CEPA] fosters an outstanding work culture, and I would love the opportunity to collaborate with them again in the future."

We very much enjoyed having the students join us for a few days. These future economists are well on their way to making a significant impact in the world of policy and economics. Kudos to them!
